INBefore Round 2 of the Grenke Freestyle Open 2026 in Karlsruhe, Germany, 18-year-old Kazakh Grandmaster Alua Nurman requested a quick selfie with World No.1 Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen agreed and posed for the picture.
However, just before the match began, Carlsen informed the tournament arbiter about the presence of a mobile phone, as electronic devices are not allowed in the playing area under FIDE rules. The arbiter then confiscated the phone in accordance with regulations.
The situation remained calm and professional, with no dispute between the players. Nurman later described the incident as “comical” and appreciated the moment. Carlsen went on to win the game.
***Chess tournaments follow strict no-device rules to ensure fair play and prevent cheating.
