CRMy partner took 3 months leave when our baby was born. To make this happen we had to get our heads round the shared family leave policy at his company, the maternity leave policy at mine, and the government statutory leave policy.
Here’s how we did it…
With all the annual leave I carried over from 2024, plus the accrued bank holidays, I was able to take 12 months of leave (10 maternity leave + 2 annual leave).
Those last two months of maternity leave allowance is what I gave to Matt for his shared parental leave.
So he ended up taking…
2 weeks paternity leave
2 months shared parental leave
2 weeks annual leave
1 week office closure for Christmas
It made so much sense for us as I would have had to take my annual leave before the end of 2025 anyway, plus I wasn’t being paid for those last three months of maternity leave.
By changing the last two months to annual leave instead, I could give that time to Matt since his company had a great shared parental leave policy.
Add that to his standard government leave and the office closing for Christmas and we managed to spend the first three months as new parents together. 💖
Looking back I’m so grateful we had that time together. I definitely wasn’t ready to lose his support after only two weeks - I hadn’t even recovered from my c section yet!
