They are roadmaps for economic opportunity, development outcomes, and greater energy security.⁠ ⁠ Recent analyses by the OECD show that aligning climate plans with development goals could lift 175 million people out of poverty. It also shows more countries are backing ambition with clear, quantifiable targets for renewable energy expansion⚡️⁠ ⁠ However to date only 23 countries of the 193 member states of the United Nations have submitted updated climate plans.⁠ ⁠ Among the G20—responsible for around 80% of global emissions—only five have done so: Canada, Brazil, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom.⁠ ⁠ With the world off track in meeting the 1.5°C goal, the upcoming plans from the European Union, China, and India will be crucial in understanding where we are in the global energy transition.
