MAThe biggest challenge with ultralight packs is often the fit. Because these packs have a more minimalistic frame (if any at all), they don’t “hide” a bad fit very well. Every body is different, and as a female, I’ve spent a long time cycling through different packs to find one that I like - often struggling through shoulder pain using packs that Tom finds very comfortable!
While for me, the best solution for discomfort is always to carry less weight, there are things you can do to make your framed ultralight pack sit more comfortably. This is my go-to sequence to ensure my framed pack is sitting properly:
1️⃣ Loosen all straps (hips, shoulders, sternum, load lifters) before putting it on.
2️⃣ The “Lean”: Lean forward so you can place the pack in the correct position.
3️⃣ “Pack above your crack”: Ensure the lumbar pad sits correctly on your hips.
4️⃣ Tighten the hip belt first: Whilst leaning forward, tighten the hip belt as tight as you can go without it being uncomfortable. When you stand upright, you would find all the weight on your hips, not your shoulders.
5️⃣ Shoulders & sternum: Tighten the shoulder straps to a comfortable position, followed by the sternum strap.
6️⃣ Load Lifters: Pull the weight in toward your back.
Note: This specific method is for framed packs! I adjust differently for frameless packs on lighter/longer trips.
