PSSunstone (1979) is a groundbreaking short film by visual artist Ed Emshwiller and computer graphics pioneer Alvy Ray Smith, who would later co-found Pixar.
Commissioned by the New York Institute of Technology, it was one of the earliest films to use computer animation.
Electronic Arts Intermix writes, “Sunstone is a landmark tape. Symbolic and poetic, it is a pivotal work in the development of an electronic language to articulate three-dimensional space.”
At a time when computers were still huge and slow, the film offered a glimpse of digital art’s future. It also became the first computer-animated work accepted into the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.
