Also before anyone asks: no I will not be at CRWUA this year, no hate to that event or anyone that attends but it seems pretty clear to me as an outside observer that we’re not making any significant progress in the echo chambers of CRWUA.
We need decision makers that are brave enough to say the quiet parts out loud like:
-EVERYONE in the basin needs to make cuts, not just the lower basin
-We have to manage based upon the actual flows within the river in a given year, not some arbitrary numbers chosen 100yrs ago
-We have to account for evaporation and seepage throughout the basin
-We cannot keep exporting alfalfa from the basin. Period. End of story. It’s got to end
-We cannot expect indigenous tribes to bear the burden of cuts, and if we pay irrigators to not use their water we also need to pay tribes to not use their water
-Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam were poorly designed and not equipped to operate at low water levels, it needs to be redesigned or the river should be routed around it
-The river is more than just a big plumbing system, and we need to manage it as an ecological value in addition to a water supply
-The time for developing new water rights has ended, we need to focus our systems on water conservation and reuse
But you won’t hear any of that being meaningfully discussed by decision makers at CRWUA 🤷🏻♀️
