When women DO use AI: • They move from testing to real project use faster than men. 44% vs 33%. • Senior women in tech lead GenAI adoption by 14 percentage points. • Women’s AI adoption in the U.S. tripled last year. This is not a skill issue. It’s a space issue. Most people try AI once. They type one sentence. They get a weak answer. They think, “I can do this better myself.” You would never give a new team member one vague sentence and expect magic. Why do you expect that from AI? AI is a conversation. You give context. You assign a role. You define the task. You choose the format. That is “prompt engineering.” You already do this every day when you delegate. Example: Weak prompt: “Write a follow-up email.” Strong prompt: “I’m a project engineer at an infrastructure firm. Write a 3-paragraph follow-up email after a site visit. Direct but warm tone. Include two action items and a clear timeline.” Same tool. Different result. The difference is you. One 20-minute email done in 2 minutes. That is 18 minutes back. Multiply that across your week. Surely AI has got better at understanding our needs and we no longer need to tell it to act like a fantastic CMO if we're asking it to help us with a marketing strategy? 🤔 Here's what ChatGPT said: A year ago, prompting was a skill tax. You needed: 👉 rigid structures 👉 magic phrases 👉 “act as a…” gymnastics 👉 long prompt templates This was because Models were brittle. Small wording changes = wildly different results. Today’s models are much better at intent inference - you can be sloppy, conversational, half-formed… and still get something decent. So: ❌ You no longer need “prompt engineering” to use AI ✅ You still need it to reliably extract high-quality, repeatable output It went on to advise when to use more structured instruction and when to just speak like a human. Access to technology has long been identified as one of the main barriers preventing underrepresented groups, including women, from fully participating in the AI revolution. In response, major technology companies are increasingly launching initiatives designed specifically to close this gap. On the surface, these efforts signal progress: recognition of inequality, willingness to act, and investment in accessibility. But inclusion is not only about who gets access. It is also about what level of opportunity is being offered. When educational platforms or AI initiatives targeted at women rely primarily on simplified tools, introductory workflows, or highly basic training paths, an uncomfortable question emerges: Are we expanding participation or unintentionally redefining expectations? The risk is subtle yet significant. By designing “specialized” environments that focus mainly on entry-level competencies, institutions may inadvertently reinforce the very stereotypes they seek to dismantle. Instead of opening pathways toward advanced technical expertise, leadership roles, or AI development itself, such initiatives can confine learners to surface-level interaction with technology. True empowerment in AI does not come from simplified exposure. It comes from access to complexity, critical understanding, experimentation, and technical depth. Ethical innovation requires more than representation metrics or symbolic inclusion. It demands equal intellectual ambition. If AI is shaping the future of work, governance, and society, then inclusive initiatives must ensure that all participants are equipped not merely to use AI, but to build, question, and lead it.
