Listen to your body, and take your rest days so you can hit your workouts hard. I know some people see a rest day and think, well I don’t really need to rest. But that’s not true - especially if you’re giving the workouts you do your all, and this is also very important if you’re in peri or post menopause. In order to stimulate muscle protein synthesis your body needs a greater stimulus from your training (and from protein intake) so you want to polarize the training you do, going hard in your workouts and taking full recovery days before hitting it again. For those of us still cycling regularly rest days are important for us as well! We can’t hit peak performance without recovery days. Remember, muscle grows when you rest, not when you’re working out. Working out creates an inflammatory response. That’s why I say “exercise is a healthy stress when we are healthy.” When we’re balancing our training, the body takes on the workout challenge and in the recovery period rebuilds itself back stronger. But if you don’t take enough rest you’re just piling on to an overly strained system. You might sustain it for a while, but it will leave your immune system weak and you’re more easily injured. If you’re not seeing results or you’ve hit a plateau one reason can be lack of balance in your training, so check in with yourself on that. After all, it’s the things we do around our training that enable us to reap the rewards of all that effort! So take time to make nourishing food for yourself, do self care activities like meditation, spending time with people you love, go to bed early, enjoy nature, do low impact fun things like walking or cruising around on your bicycle. Remember, QUALITY over quantity with your training, and there’s a lot to be said for a well balanced plan.
