When you’ve been experiencing anxiety for a number of years it can be difficult to see how your life has been defined by it. We can start to justify saying no to social engagements, job promotions or anything that makes us feel uncomfortable. Whilst anxiety is exhausting to live with it can feel easier to live with it rather than the unknown discomfort of tackling it. But what would you be doing if you weren’t carrying that heavy burden of anxiety? What would you be saying yes to? What would you be experiencing? Who would you be spending time with? What would you be doing? Who could you be?... What could you achieve?... Let’s inspire each other. Drop in the comments something you’d love to do that doesn’t seem possible right night now.

Anxiety is like, “You got a problem? YO! I’ll solve it, check out the hook while the dj revolves it.” Except it stops at Yo, I’ll solve it and repeats the beat over and over and over and over and over… You get the picture. So what do you do? I turn on some music, shake out the tension rising up in my body, and give anxiety a cup of tea and a seat way back in the basement. She’s good there for now. I meditate and go inward asking myself, what can you control right now? And I work through the list of things that make me happy. I cannot control anything but my thoughts and today I’m choosing to think about the things I can control. Anxiety can go take a nap. #anxiety #anxiousattachment #greenvillesc

Five behaviors that make anxiety better in the moment but worse in the long run. 1. Escape: whether a social situation, a grocery store, a confined space. When anxiety hits and the urge to leave comes on, don’t! This will make you feel relief in the moment but cause anxiety to become worse. 2. Anxious avoidance: the moment you say nope to a situation to avoid the anxious feeling you get, you are rewarded with instant relief. But the longer or more you stay away from that situation, the anxiety and fear grows. 3. Compensatory strategies: this occurs after a high anxiety situation. Like, someone who is fearful of germs will wash their hands excessively. 4. Anticipation: this is when you reverse and anticipate worse case scenarios that you believe may occur in the feared situation. Often we believe it is helpful because it means we are prepared. However, by doing this, it can lead to hyper-vigilance and excessive worry about constructing a plan. 5. Reassurance seeking: in moments of anxiety or doubt we may ask for reassurance that everything will be okay. Over time that instant relief can become addictive and we develop dependency on the reassurance or the person who provides it. #truenorthpsychologicalservicesllc #mentalhealth #selfcare #anxiety

The number one issue my clients ask for help with, regardless of the cause, is anxiety. There are a few important truths about anxiety that I want to share. 1. Anxiety is not a weakness. It is a nervous system response. Your brain is trying to protect you. Sometimes it simply overreacts to a perceived threat. 2. Anxiety is uncomfortable, but it is not dangerous. 3. Avoidance makes anxiety stronger. When we avoid what makes us anxious, the brain learns that the situation must truly be dangerous. 4. You cannot think your way out of anxiety. Anxiety lives in the body and the nervous system, which is why mindfulness must be learned and used to cope. 5. Anxiety can be retrained. With practice and support the brain can learn new patterns. 6. Self compassion helps calm anxiety. The nervous system responds far better to kindness than criticism. 7. Anxiety is the brain’s alarm system, and everyone experiences it. You do not have to handle your anxiety alone. Anxiety is often maintained by patterns we don’t even realize we’re engaging in. In this video, I talk about three common patterns that can keep anxiety going: • Avoidance – avoiding situations that make us anxious can actually strengthen anxiety over time. • Overestimating danger – assuming the worst-case scenario is likely to happen. • Constantly seeking reassurance – repeatedly checking with others or ourselves to feel safe. The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety completely, it’s to understand it and respond differently. Once you start recognizing these patterns, anxiety can become much more manageable. If anxiety has been affecting your daily life, therapy can help you learn practical tools to navigate it.
