If I could tell parents of athletes one thing, without hurting feelings, it’s this: Stop trying to analyze the game with them. Not because you don’t understand the sport. Not because you don’t care. But because games are emotionally expensive. Your athlete just spent an hour plus managing: • Pressure • Adrenaline • Mistakes • Expectations • Their body and their mind When that’s over, their nervous system needs to come down, not break it all back open. If they want to talk, let them lead. Say things like: “Mhmm.” “I could see that.” “That makes sense.” If they’re quiet? Let them be quiet. Processing doesn’t always look like talking. Sometimes it looks like silence, music, food, or a car ride home without commentary. If they’re feeling self critical even compliments could trigger an argument. You don’t strengthen athletes by fixing every moment. You strengthen them by creating safety. And when athletes feel safe, that’s when growth actually sticks.
