Opportunities are everywhere, especially for young people, and this is one knocking on your door. An opportunity to be a UNICEF GenU 9ja YPAT.
In 2024, I came across the UNICEF Generation Unlimited Young People’s Action Team Program, the Youth Advisory Board of UNICEF Nigeria, and an avenue to volunteer with UNICEF as a young person towards advancing their objective to skill young people with learning, earning, and social impact opportunities. I patiently waited and positioned myself for when the opportunity would open for the next cohort, so I could apply. I remember one of the then YPATs saying “It’s a very competitive program, thousands apply and only like four young people from every state in Nigeria would be picked”. However, I had made up my mind. When the 2025 call was made, I applied and got in. (The 4 people quota is not correct btw). 😂
In the past one year and 3 months as a YPAT, I have contributed to UNICEF GenU’s work of skilling and connecting millions of young people with learning and earning opportunities, participated in development campaigns like Green Rising, Championed and co-led multiple projects and initiatives, represented youths in high level forums and programs, represented UNICEF Nigeria, Nigeria, and West Africa as a youth delegate nationally and internationally, won multiple awards from campaigns, contributed to The Dakar Youth Compact 2025 which focuses on peace, job creation, and education for youth in West Africa and the Sahel, even got featured as a youth voice for peace in the UNOWAS magazine.
