Black hats can trick you into sharing your password several ways, and they can even create fake, realistic login pages that capture everything you type, including multi-factor login codes.
#Passkeys and hardware tokens like #yubikey (*) stop most account takeovers because they require physical access to your device to break in, providing a cryptographic challenge and response, and that's why they're more secure.
Hardware tokens prove physical possession of a device while passkeys add a second factor (such as a PIN or a fingerprint) making it multi-factor in one easy solution. The security is taken further by having a unique cryptographic key per website or application, making passkeys completely phish-proof and often passwordless.
If your system asks for a PIN with your hardware token, then it's acting as a hardware passkey. These work across platforms and are good if you have a mix of devices from different ecosystems. Most mobile and workstation devices already have passkey functionality built in, too.
