Don’t turn a controlled ascent into a runaway one! ⚠️ While this video is funny to watch, a ‘runaway ascent’ is a serious safety risk. A common habit in training is reaching for the ‘Inflate’ button the moment the ‘Up’ signal is given. While it feels intuitive, using your power inflator to start an ascent is a recipe for an ‘elevator’ ride straight to the surface, putting you at risk for decompression sickness. Why don’t we inflate? ❌ Adding air at depth to go up is like adding fuel to a fire. As you rise, that air expands, creating exponential lift. This leads to a rapid, uncontrolled ascent and increases the risk of decompression sickness (DCS). Do this instead 👇🏽 ✅ Signal your buddy to ascend. Hold your inflator hose up above your head with your left hand. Keep your thumb OFF the “inflate” button. ✅ Take a deep, controlled breath in to initiate your lift. Use slow, steady fin kicks only as needed. ✅ As you move shallower and the air in your BCD expands, release small “burps” of air to maintain a slow pace (no faster than your smallest bubbles). ⚠️ Disclaimer: The video above features certified dive professionals demonstrating an “uncontrolled ascent” for educational purposes. While Monterey Bay is a known “hotspot” for adult white sharks—especially during the fall when they return from the “White Shark Café” in the mid-Pacific—seeing them on our own survey gear is incredibly rare. We’re getting messages every single day about other mums giving birth on the streets. Puppies are being born right now in dangerous situations, but with no foster homes we can’t even get them into the vet. Our hands are tied. We already have mums and pups, sick and injured dogs filling every space – and it’s breaking our hearts to have to turn away more when we know they won’t survive out there 💔. ✨ But fostering a mum and pups is one of the most rewarding things you can ever do. ✨ We’ve just had two litters raised in foster homes, and the foster families said it was life-changing to watch them blossom.
