Since I’m in active ABSITE prep exam mode I’m using anki to help me stay on top of my workload. There is NOTHING that I loath more than not finishing my reviews and new cards and having to make them up the next day.
Here’s some tips for using anki whether you’re in board prep, exam prep, or just trying to stay ahead!
𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬: Craft clear and concise flashcards, focusing on key concepts, keywords, and diagrams. Avoid information overload and keep cards targeted for quick review. And if you’re using a premade deck, add cards for topics that aren’t covered or once you struggle with ! They don’t have to be fancy!
𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥: This is why Anki works! Phrase questions in a way that requires you to actively retrieve information from memory, enhancing long-term retention.
𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Leverage Anki’s algorithm to schedule reviews at optimal intervals. Regularly review cards just before you’re about to forget them, maximizing memory reinforcement. My “learning steps” for new cards is set to 10m 1d 3d. If you need me to explain ask about it in the comments !
𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬: if you have a premade deck, you can start by unsuspending a certain group of cards. Or you can search cards you want to study by creating a deck based on tags. Either way you can use anki to focus on whatever topics you’re currently focusing on.
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐲: Make Anki a daily habit. Allocate a specific time for reviewing and stick to it. Regular, consistent use is more effective than cramming right before exams.
Remember, adapting these tips to your learning style and the demands of your medical school curriculum will lead to you feeling confident on test day!
