In 2016 in Poland, a passenger train traveling at about 110 km/h collided with a truck carrying heavy metal beams at a railway crossing, after the truck became stuck on the tracks. The train driver, Mateusz Szymański, realized the train could not stop in time, activated the emergency brakes, and ran through the carriages shouting for passengers to get down and brace for impact just seconds before the crash. When the train struck the truck’s trailer, debris shattered windows and tore through parts of the train, causing dozens of passengers to be injured, mostly from glass and impact-related wounds, but no deaths were reported. The driver’s quick thinking and bravery were widely credited with preventing fatalities, and he was later praised as a national hero in Poland.
