CLNeed help tackling your life admin?
I’ve noticed this trend for friends to get together and hold an “admin night” where they can sit down and collectively tackle items on their financial to-do lists.
I thought: I like the sound of this! Making time to focus on all those pesky jobs we keep putting off is key. But being able to pool skills and knowledge and learn from friends who’ve been there, done that, and can offer tips and moral support is so helpful and motivating.
For a twist, we thought we would hold one after work on Monday evening - and SO many colleagues from across the Financial Times said “great idea, we’re coming”
⏰ At the start, we introduced ourselves (many of us had never met through work before, as the FT is a really big company) and shared one problem we wanted to tackle. Then we opened the laptops and got on with it!
💻I split off a “pensions huddle” and we got our super colleague @josephine_cumbo to join us on Zoom and answer lots of questions about the FT pension scheme (plus we have a list of questions to take back to @scottishwidows our workplace pension provider).
👛 Isabel led another group who really wanted to talk about budgeting methods, apps and what really works.
📊 Our colleague Jonno from the data team is going to lead next months’ session and do a live demo of how he builds spreadsheets to monitor his finances - I am so down for this!
🥰 Above all, being able to share the burden of trying to find out the answers to money questions alone felt SO GOOD. We gained confidence and left smiling.
🙋♀️ Is this something you think you might try with friends or colleagues? And if you’ve already jumped on this trend and held an admin night, did you enjoy the experience and what else would you recommend?
🙏 Thanks to my work bestie @isabelberwick who runs the FT’s Working It brand (she’s our resident workplace and careers expert) Ada John who runs the FT Wellbeing programme and @lucyaliceholliday for making the cookies - above and beyond!
