JUWhy I love Affinity Designer – Part 2: Combining Pixel Textures and Vector Shapes (with ease!)
When I started working with digital illustration 10 years ago, I soon realized that the graphic designer in me needed the precision and flexibility of vector shapes, but the illustrator in me needed the organic aesthetic of natural textures. So I looked for ways to combine these two components. But no app or technique was really suitable for my workflow.
🫤 You could paint beautiful textures in Photoshop, but handling vectors is tedious.
🙄 Adobe Illustrator was of course the king when it came to vector drawings, but the use of textures was either only possible as an inserted image (very inflexible) or with the help of picture brushes, which I found difficult to control and anything but natural or intuitive.
Then my prayers were answered and Affinity Designer was launched.
🤩 The groundbreaking feature: drawing with vector and pixel is possible within one app! And on the iPad too, which makes drawing really intuitive and natural.
In Affinity Designer, you can switch back and forth between the “Designer Persona” (=vector mode) and the “Pixel Persona” (=pixel mode). The tools change, but the layer, color and other palettes remain the same.
When drawing with a pixel brush, a pixel layer is automatically created within the clicked vector layer—I find this super practical for my workflow!
And again: this is not an affiliate thing or paid ad. For me, Affinity Designer is simply my favorite tool to work with. Other apps like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Fresco, Procreate etc. are also great tools, some of which I also use. In my experience, each app has different strengths and weaknesses, and everyone has to find out for themselves which tool suits them best. I chose the tool that best serves my style—and conversely, the features of different tools often influence the development of an illustration style.
