And not just detect them, but actually measure distance and position as the camera moves forward.
What used to take expensive hardware, full engineering teams, and complex mapping systems is now possible for anyone with a half decent computer and an internet connection. That is the shift happening in AI right now. The barrier to entry keeps dropping while the capability keeps rising. It is turning students, indie developers, and hobbyists into people who can build tools that genuinely solve problems in the world.
Road maintenance is slow because it depends on manual surveys and outdated reports. An AI system like this could automate the entire process. It could scan entire cities, highlight the exact coordinates of every road defect, predict deterioration, and notify crews before small cracks turn into big repairs. When the cost of intelligence drops, the impact gets huge.
Imagine this running on every delivery vehicle, rideshare car, or dashcam. You would have a live, constantly updating map of road quality for entire countries. All built on code someone could write in a weekend.
