MIClock off! ⏰
Handling in-flight emergencies is one of the most critical parts of an air traffic controller’s job. When a pilot declares an emergency, ATC’s role is to provide clear, calm, and effective assistance to help bring the situation to a safe outcome. One useful tool for controllers is the acronym ASSIST, which serves as a step-by-step guide for managing emergencies.
⭐️ A – Acknowledge the emergency call and confirm the nature of the problem.
⭐️ S – Separate the aircraft from other traffic to give it a safe operating space.
⭐️ S – Silence non-essential communications on the frequency to keep the channel clear.
⭐️ I – Inform supervisors and other relevant units about the emergency.
⭐️ S – Support the flight with any needed information such as weather, diversion options, or vectors.
⭐️ T – Time: Give the pilot all the time they need and avoid rushing decisions.
