ROBoston-based startup Alterego has developed a wearable device that enables silent communication by detecting neural signals and muscle movements associated with speech intent.
The project originated at MIT Media Lab in 2018 with its first prototype publicly demonstrated that year.
The headset captures electrical signals from cranial nerves traveling to speech muscles, while tiny cameras detect subtle jaw and throat movements.
Users can silently control computers, take notes, query AI assistants, and communicate with other Alterego wearers through bone conduction audio feedback.
The technology works in noisy environments and supports multilingual capabilities and visual queries.
Founded by CEO Arnav Kapur, the company spun off as a for-profit entity in early 2025, promising accessibility benefits for people with conditions like ALS while offering a new paradigm for human-computer interaction.
