ROWhat is it about autumn? The forests of Romania, draped in the russet and gold of a late-season embrace, seem almost mythical—something out of a tale, where the veil between reality and folklore feels dangerously thin. Walking through these woods, there’s an eerie, magnetic silence. You’re half-expecting a dark-eyed figure to step out from behind an ancient oak, offering you either salvation or damnation.
But here, it’s just nature at its most haunting. The Carpathian forests are a patchwork of legends—some say these are the hunting grounds of Dacian kings and shadowed routes for medieval outlaws. In places like the Hoia-Baciu Forest near Cluj-Napoca, stories of eerie lights and inexplicable phenomena have earned it a reputation as one of the most haunted spots in Europe. But it’s more than just superstition; this land has witnessed centuries of bloodshed and glory, which seem to whisper in the rustle of every fallen leaf.
For all its spectral atmosphere, autumn in these woods is mesmerizing. The sheer scale of the forests—covering over 6.5 million hectares—reminds you how small you are. The ground, a carpet of orange and crimson, crunches underfoot as you pass through these hallowed groves. A chill breeze catches the scent of wet earth and distant bonfires. AM🌊 The Marbled Murrelet is a seabird that defies expectations.
They spend most of their life on the ocean, then fly inland to nest on the wide, flat branches of ancient trees, laying one single egg balanced on a mossy limb. To make that possible, murrelets need forests with living giants: trees often more than 150 years old.
ABC’s Lindsay Adrean talks about how these old-growth canopies shelter chicks from predators and harsh weather, making intact forests essential to the murrelet’s survival. When ancient trees disappear, so do the nesting platforms these birds have depended on for millennia.

THOld-growth forests are irreplaceable ecosystems that store carbon, regulate water, and support incredible biodiversity. Many species, like old man’s beard, depend on ancient trees and stable, humid canopy conditions found only in old-growth.
In British Columbia, Premier @davidebybc committed to expand protected areas and increase conservation financing, but old-growth including on Vancouver Island, continues to be logged. Only a fraction of the island’s original old-growth remains, and most of the highly productive, low-elevation old forests are still at risk.
Protecting old-growth forests preserves habitat for species whose survival depends on them, including the threatened Marbled Murrelet and Northern Goshawk, declining lichens like Usnea longissima, and the nearly extirpated Northern Spotted Owl. When old-growth disappears, species that rely on it disappear too.

CBA Western red cedar tree that is believed to have been centuries old fell in Vancouver’s Stanley Park over the weekend, reaching the end of its life at what some experts describe as a particularly stressful time for ancient trees in the area.
The immense tree was discovered on the forest floor Sunday near the intersection of the Tatlow and Lovers’ trails in the southwest corner of the park.
It was anywhere between 800 and 900 years old, according to local tree tour guide Colin Spratt.
Spratt said the tree’s collapse could be a symptom of a larger problem in Vancouver’s largest park.
A number of Western red cedars are facing increasing stress due to drought conditions, climate change, pollution and, locally, a looper moth infestation.
