I spent 50 hours building with Claude Opus 4.6’s cloud code feature and witnessed something remarkable. I discuss how AI has essentially eliminated the middle layer of software engineering - the actual coding - allowing me to build full-stack applications by simply describing what I want. I explore the three layers of engineering (planning, coding, and deployment), explain why the coding layer is disappearing, and reveal the uncomfortable truth: the planning layer is next. I argue that as AI learns to reason about what to build rather than just how, the only remaining value in engineering will be taste - knowing which problems matter and why.
