Anhingas lack a gland that produces oil to help waterproof feathers. This is not a disadvantage for this interesting bird, and allows it to saturate its feathers and submerge its body to forage. This is why you see them soaking up the sun as much as they soak up water. I don’t think this clip is overly interesting, but I like the way the water soaked features look as it pops up like a periscope between moments looking for a meal beneath the surface. #wildlifephotography #wildlife #birdphotography #naturephotography #nature #birding #sonyalpha #anhinga #floridaphotographer #outdoors #birdwatching

I’ve never had such close-up views of an Anhinga as I enjoyed last week at @bioparquelosocarros in Villavicencio, Meta, where I was invited to give a talk by the @camaravillavicencio. What a weird and wonderful bird! Fun fact about the Anhinga: their names comes from a’ñinga in the Brazilian Tupi language and means “devil bird” or “snake bird”. They are great divers, spear fishing skills are on point, can pretend to be a snake, excellent climbers and they can fly… can you imagine?! If you can’t tell, I love these birds!
