SURight after our amazing family trip to Roatan, Mitch needed to get his appendix out (unexpectedly, obviously). It forced us to cancel another, longer trip we’d been planning for months. We are so incredibly thankful that this happened in between trips so that he could rest at home in a comfortable, familiar place.
It has really reinforced the importance of making sure we are prepared for the worst when traveling, especially since we’re always traveling with little kids. I’m going to be more proactive about bringing medications we might need and knowing all of the urgent cares/emergency rooms while traveling ahead of time from now on. This is something we definitely should have been already doing but since we’re rarely sick it didn’t really occur to me and now we know better.

CT scan showed that it was equivocal for appendicitis but thankfully they tested my stool antigen which became positive. The ER doctor also asked if I ate alot because my intestines were full of 💩💩

YO11 DAYS IN “HOSPITAL HELL” AND THE LESSONS TO HELP ANYONE THROUGH SUCH A THING.
On 3/12/2026, I walked into the ER with abdomen pain. By 3/13, a perforated appendix was out. But that was the easy part. My digestive tract hit a dead-stop - Ileus.
The plumbing backed up. Acid reflux became a fire. Then came the NG (nose-to-gut) tube. Four attempts. Four times feeling like I was being stabbed in the sinuses and choked simultaneously due to a deviated septum from years of martial arts. 🥊👃
I was ready to say “F this,” but the surgeon finally cleared the path.
THE LESSONS
1️⃣ SPEED IS SOVEREIGNTY: If it’s appendicitis that requires surgery, advocate for surgery ASAP. Minutes matter.
2️⃣ NEVER GO ALONE: Even the best hospitals miss things. You need an advocate to ensure you aren’t neglected or “forgotten” in the system. 🛡️
3️⃣ THE NARCOTIC TRAP: Narcotics are the ultimate “Emergency Brake” for your gut. Get off them the second you can to get your motility back on track.

DRA 10-year study from Finland just changed how we think about appendicitis. 👇
Researchers followed patients with uncomplicated appendicitis who were treated with antibiotics, instead of surgery- and more than half never had another flare-up and still had their appendix a decade later.
Now, the big concern with appendicitis is always rupture- and surgery is still the right call in complicated cases. But this study shows that for uncomplicated cases, antibiotics may be a genuine alternative worth discussing with your doctor.
The appendix isn’t as useless as we once thought, either- it plays a role in gut immunity.
Always speak to your doctor about what’s right for your individual case.
