Buckle up, because the Artemis II flight path is basically the ultimate cosmic rollercoaster🎢 Instead of a straight shot, NASA is sending four astronauts on a “hybrid free-return trajectory.” They’ll whip around Earth to gain speed, then use the Moon’s gravity like a giant slingshot to hurl themselves back home. No engine burns for the return trip—just pure orbital mechanics and vibes. #artemis #moon #fyp #nasa #space

Artemis 2 is a crewed NASA space mission planned for early 2026 (with a launch window opening as early as February 6, 2026). It will be the first time humans have traveled beyond low-Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972, taking four astronauts on a ~10-day trip around the Moon and back to Earth. Unlike a lunar landing mission, Artemis 2 won’t set foot on the Moon’s surface — instead, it will orbit or fly around the Moon in a “free-return” trajectory, using the Moon’s gravity to slingshot the spacecraft back toward Earth safely. The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. 🌗Artemis 2 is a test flight with people aboard but it’s not just any test. Its purpose is to: 🔹 Demonstrate systems in real space conditions The mission will test the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the Orion spacecraft, and support systems together while humans are aboard verifying life support, navigation, communications, power, and safety systems in deep space beyond Earth’s protective magnetic field. 🎯Follow @go_atomico for ATOMICO’s curious adventures through Space and Time, and learn more about astronomy and astrophysics along the way. NASA’s Artemis II returns to the launch pad. After a successful flight readiness review and polling “go” for launch, Artemis II’s SLS rocket returned to pad 39B of Kennedy Space Center early in the morning on March 20th. The four astronauts entered quarantine on March 18th, exactly 14 days before the targeted launch date April 1st, 2026 at 6:24 PM. This is as close as we’ve ever been to Artemis II launching. Let’s hope all goes smoothly from here so we can see a beautiful daylight launch on April 1st! Go NASA! Go Artemis! 🎥 me @nyoom.tm for @thelaunchpadnetwork

NASA is increasing the cadence of future Artemis missions. The Artemis III mission, now in 2027, will be designed to test out systems and operational capabilities in low Earth orbit as preparation for an Artemis IV landing in 2028. This new mission will endeavor to include a rendezvous and docking with one or both commercial landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin. This change will accelerate the flight rate of the Artemis missions and enable a safer and more reliable launch cadence. There will be no changes to the Artemis II mission. In this video, we see a timelapse of the Artemis II rocket and spacecraft rolling back to the Vehicle Assembly Building at @NASAKennedy atop of the crawler-transporter on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Teams will conduct work and repairs on the Artemis II vehicle before returning it to Launch Pad 39B to launch on its crewed mission around the Moon no earlier than April 2026. Our Artemis II crew will be going around the Moon... but they’ll always find their way back home 🌎 During this complex and far-reaching journey, the four crew members will travel ~685,000 miles looping around the Moon and back to Earth in a span of about 10-days. The mission follows a free-return trajectory that uses the gravity of the Earth and Moon to naturally guide the crew home. During the mission, the astronauts are going to get a unique perspective of the Moon while testing Orion’s systems and performing science operations. Visual description: This artist’s concept depicts the trajectory for NASA’s Artemis II test flight, an approximately 10-day mission that will send four astronauts around the Moon and back. The agency’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft will launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Orion will fly an orbit around Earth and then venture around the Moon before returning to Earth. Credit: @NASAGoddard

next year, Artemis 2 is going to take 4 astronauts farther than any human has ever gone before. it’s the next step in NASA’s 3-part Artemis program, which will land humans back on the moon for the first time in 50 years. here’s how the program works and why do it… hint: MARS. *in a previous version of this video, I mistakenly said “2002” not “2022”! 🤦‍♀️ it’s fixed now. #science #nasa #space #moon #mars

The Artemis II flight path is a 10-day journey designed as a "hybrid free-return trajectory". Unlike the uncrewed Artemis I, this mission will send four astronauts around the Moon without entering lunar orbit or landing. Mission Timeline & Path • Launch & High Earth Orbit (Days 1–2): After launching from Kennedy Space Center on the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the Orion spacecraft will enter a high elliptical Earth orbit with a 24-hour period. During this time, the crew will test life-support systems and perform a proximity operations demonstration using the spent upper stage of the rocket as a target. • Trans-Lunar Injection (Day 2): Orion’s main engine will fire to send the crew toward the Moon. This burn places the craft on a free-return path, meaning if propulsion fails later, the gravity of the Moon and Earth will naturally pull the spacecraft back home. • Outbound Journey (Days 3–5): The crew will travel for approximately four days toward the Moon, conducting system checks and radiation shielding tests. • Lunar Flyby (Day 6): Orion will pass roughly 4,600 to 6,400 miles (7,400 to 10,300 km) beyond the Moon's far side. This will set a new record for the farthest humans have ever traveled from Earth, surpassing the Apollo 13 distance. • Return & Splashdown (Days 7–10): After swinging around the Moon, gravity will slingshot Orion back to Earth. The mission concludes with a high-speed reentry into Earth's atmosphere at 25,000 mph and a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego. Mission Quick Facts • Target Launch: No earlier than February 6, 2026. • Crew: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. • Total Distance: Over 1 million kilometres (620,000+ miles) round trip. #nasa #science #space #technology #spacemission
