GRThe worst building material in the world?
Well that’s the unfortunate title often ascribed to Bungaroosh. There are several reasons why Bungaroosh was used in late Georgian (Regency) Brighton, with the brick tax and the local availability of certainly material being the foremost.
The exact origin of the word Bungaroosh is not known. It is thought that maybe the “bung” part literally derives from the fact that they would bung anything they could find into the lime mortar mix!
However, these Georgian buildings built from Bungaroosh have stood for the past 200 years and will hopefully stand for at least another 200 more. Although a terrible material by modern standards, bungaroosh often won’t cause any major issues if it is well maintained and has not been repaired with non-breathable materials such as cement and plasticised paints.
