WHKeep in mind, my stance here is NOT that “recomping” is impossible or that it does not occur. My stance is that it is not THE MOST EFFECTIVE strategy for physique improvement.
Generally a recomp approach entails either maintainence calories, or just a very slight surplus or deficit in conjunction with hard training. Can this approach yield incremental improvements in muscle gain and/or fat loss? Yes. But the improvements in either area will NOT be nearly as significant as what they could be with a phasic approach to diet.
And if you follow me or work with me, you know I am NOT a proponent of big dirty bulks or drastic cuts with steep deficits. I approach both phases patiently. But I always periodize nutrition into focused phases to maximize the outcomes for the target trait. And each phase sets up the next. And the end result is a substantial transformation.
