NASA’s Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is revealing the hidden features of our planet with unprecedented detail.
🛰️ What is SWOT Mapping?
* Vertical Gravity Gradient: gravity anomalies that reveal the rugged landscape of the seafloor hidden beneath the waves.
* Hidden Features: By measuring small changes in the water’s surface height, scientists can map underwater mountains (seamounts), ridges, and trenches.
* Global Precision: This data provides a high-resolution look at the Earth’s topography, helping us understand ocean currents and climate change.
From the smallest ripples to the deepest trenches, SWOT is giving us a new perspective on our blue planet.

NAHave you heard of an XBT? These students at Florida Christian Academy got to learn ALL about it from a real Navy Scientist during Miami #NavyWeek!!
An XBT is a small probe that is dropped over the side of a ship. As it falls through the water, it measures temperature. Small wires transmit the temperature data back to the ship where it is recorded for further analysis.
Because the probe falls through the water at a known rate, the depth of the probe can be inferred from the time of launch. Scientists then plot temperature as a function of depth to create a temperature profile of the water.
It may surprise you to learn that temperature profiles play an important role in multibeam mapping operations. In order to make accurate depth measurements using multibeam #sonar, we need to know how fast the sound wave emitted from the sonar unit travels through seawater. The speed at which sound travels changes as the density of water varies through the water column. Temperature and salinity are the two main variables that affect the density of #seawater.
Software allows #scientists to combine temparture profiles from an XBT with surface #salinity data to determine an overall sound speed profile. The sound speed values can then be applied to multibeam soundings in real time for an accurate measure of #bathymetry.

TE🚤 This isn’t a toy — it’s science in action!
This remote-controlled boat is conducting a bathymetric survey of Teatown Lake. Programmed to follow a specific route, it uses sonar to record water depths in the area that was recently dredged near Bergmann Boardwalk.
The data helps us understand how the dredge has changed the lakebed — and supports long-term health and restoration of the ecosystem.

Our Exhibits Team found a pretty epic way to illustrate the local land that lies underwater. Did you know the floor mural out on Blue Beach depicts the #bathymetry of the underwater canyons off #LaJollaShores! Bathymetry is the measurement of different underwater depths and terrains of the seafloor. We can use those measurements to create #BathymetricMaps – the underwater version of a topographic map 🗺️
