Archaeologists have traced some of the earliest glass beads back to ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia and Egypt, where artisans mastered early glass-making techniques around 2500 BCE. These beads were treasured for their color, shine, and rarity—often symbolizing wealth, status, and spiritual protection. As trade routes expanded across Africa, Europe, and Asia, glass beads became powerful tools of exchange. During the era of trans-Saharan trade and later European maritime trade, beads produced in places like Venice—especially the famous Murano glass beads—were widely traded across the African continent.
