GRSTAND UP.
We use this platform to encourage, to educate and to advocate for people with disabilities.
Before I got into modeling, I was speaking to schools and organizations about bullying, kindness acceptance, and opportunities-because I myself was bullied.
The use of the R word has been increasing lately. I stand with
@specialolympics @bestbuddies @johnscrazysocks @anthonykshriver @timothyshriver @momccormick7 and others to call for an END of the use of this word.
We understand that ‘retarded’ was once a medical term, but that’s no longer the case.
1. It’s a term used to degrade and dehumanize people. Many times these individuals cannot speak or stand up for themselves.
2. The R-word is HATE speech. If you hear someone using it, please ask them to stop and explain how hurtful it is not only to the person, but to family and friends of those loved ones . Stand up ⬆️ and don’t be afraid to say something.
3. We all deserve to feel safe and when the R word is thrown around, it creates a society where degrading people is okay and reinforces the stereotype that people with intellectual disabilities are not as capable or worthy of respect.
4. Culture and leadership start at the top. People take their cues from our leaders. If we ignore and excuse those in powerful positions using hate speech we allow it to continue, become acceptable, and trickle down.
5. SPEAK UP. STAND UP. Please. This isn’t about what party you belong to or politics. It is about basic human rights, dignity and feeling safe.
6. Please make your voices heard so we can end this hate and get on to respecting differences where each of us has a place in this world and feels safe.
