Okay this time I tried my best to be tidy and all but it turned out a big mess of wires. Here's the idea: a sort of random electronic dice using digital ICs only. How does it work? I am using a capacitor to control a voltage controlled oscillator. This part is needed since I wanted that visual effect of the number slowint down until stopping. The output of the VCO, which is a kind of ugly square wave with a variable duty cycle, goes straight to the binary counter. To avoid displaying the zero in the 7seg display, I then used a logic adder to increase the count from 0-5 to 1-6. To reset the counter at 6 (which is 7 after the adder) I've been a bit lazy: I used a diode AND gate instead of another 74xx IC to control whether the out is 7 ( "111" in binary). The output of all of this goes to a 7seg driver and here you are. Where is the "random" part? Well.. Achieving real randomness in an electronic system is a very hard job. But I really didn't even try. The trick is that once you push the button, the VCO frequency will be high enough to "scroll" some number depending on how much time you'll be pushing the button. So the result is a function of the time the button is pressed, but it varies so much with a minimal difference (milliseconds?) that the result will be practically random.
