Expanding a binomial means rewriting an expression with two terms inside parentheses into an equivalent form without parentheses. For simple cases like (a + b) squared, expansion comes from multiplying the binomial by itself, term by term. Each term in the first factor multiplies every term in the second, which leads to combining like terms at the end. This explains why (a + b) squared becomes a squared plus 2ab plus b squared, since both a times b and b times a appear during multiplication. The same idea applies to expressions like (a + b)(a − b), where careful multiplication shows how certain terms cancel out, leaving a simpler result. Expanding binomials is really about understanding how multiplication works rather than memorizing isolated formulas. For higher powers, such as (a + b) to the power of n, clear patterns start to appear. The numbers in front of each term follow a predictable structure given by Pascal’s triangle, where each row corresponds to a different power of the binomial. These coefficients represent how many times each combination of a and b shows up in the expansion. This reveals a deeper connection between algebra and counting, since the coefficients are tied to how many ways terms can be formed. Learning to expand binomials strengthens algebraic thinking and prepares you for later topics like factoring, polynomial graphs, and probability, where similar ideas show up again. Follow @physics_unplugged | video description 👇 Galton Board with Pascal’s Triangle: 6000 steel balls (and one gold bead) fall through 14 levels of branching paths and always end up matching a bell curve distribution. Each ball has a 50/50 chance of going left or right at each branch such that the balls are distributed at the bottom by the mathematical binomial distribution. In addition the number of balls in each bin can be predicted by Pascal’s triangle, where the number on each hexagonal branch point represents the number of possible paths to reach that point from the top. See if your eyes can follow the path of the gold bead (representing a single random path) in the 240fps slow motion segment of the video. This extraordinary design by Philip Poissant is a modern version of the Galton Board, invented by Sir Francis Galton (1894) to demonstrate the Central Limit Theorem and show how random processes gather around the mean.
