KAAfter what I just learned, I'm looking for this one word on meat labels that most people don't even know exists.
As more and more bioengineered chicken and beef come to the grocery store, it's important to know what to look out for to make sure you're getting real, quality meat.
You're not going to see them putting big scary words like "lab-grown" or "synthetic" on packaging.
They're going to do everything they can to word it so that it doesn't seem like what it actually is.
Instead, you'll see something that sounds almost natural.
The word you need to look for is "cell-cultured."
Yes, US legislators have already made it legal, and the USDA has already approved labels like "cell-cultivated chicken" and "cell-cultivated beef."
This is their way of making lab-grown meat sound acceptable.
But let's be clear: this is not real meat.
This is meat grown in a bioreactor from animal cells and processed in a lab.
It has never been part of a living, breathing animal.
So the next time you're at the grocery store, read the labels carefully.
Look for words like "cell-cultivated," "cell-based," or "made by growing animal cells."
If you see any of these phrases, put it back.
