One of the things I wanted to do in Kabul was find Haji Mirzaman. He is a legend and one of the last photographers still using the kamra-e-faoree, or wooden box camera. He built this camera himself over 55 years ago and is still using it today. It was fascinating to watch him work because the box acts as both the camera and the darkroom. He takes the photo and then fully develops the print inside the box using chemicals and water. There is no digital screen or retakes, just pure skill. 🇦🇫 THE LAST BOX CAMERA IN AFGHANISTAN Haji Mirzaman is not your common photographer. In a country were portraits are being torn and painted over, he still takes beautiful photographs in his patio with his old camera. He built it 55 years ago based on the first Box Cameras from the 1890s. He pours some liquid solution with some salts, sets a shawl as background, focuses the lens and quickly lets the light in to snap the shot on some film that he later develops. The whole process was one of the best experiences we had in Afghanistan and while the pictures were being developed, he invited us to lunch and tea over stories and photos of his youth. Then, the big reveal: what do you think of my portrait? Would you want one?

Today, anyone can take a selfie in an instant. Yet, there was a time when photography was a new invention and mesmerized people. Everyone who wanted a photo would have to get ready and go to professional studios where they would click pictures in often formal poses. It was a luxury few could afford. Photos were deeply treasured and framed in ornate frames and displayed proudly. Can you imagine a world where you could not click pictures on vacations as there were no personal cameras? Sounds ancient, doesn’t it? Did you know that tourist destinations often attracted professional photographers, who used elaborate machinery to click and process pictures? If you want to experience those old days, there’s still a chance. Meet Tikam Chand ji, a third-generation photographer who clicks pictures using a vintage 1860 Carl Zeiss Jena box camera. Carrying on a legacy that has sustained his family for over 95 years, Tikam Chand ji offers a rare chance to experience the past in the modern age. Even in today’s digital age, Tikam Chand ji sets up his marvellous camera in front of the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur and clicks pictures of interested tourists. He even processes them in a similar manner, using the same steps that were practised when photography was a new and upcoming procession. He excels in the art of portraiture, and even though it’s getting harder to get his raw materials, he still produces marvellous shots that will remind you of the pictures in your ancestral album. The camera requires many repairs and is the last of its kind in the world. It could not have a more loving caretaker than Tikam Chand ji, who knows every last nut and bolt in the apparatus. Quite revolutionary for its time, the camera has a darkroom, fixer, developer and film box all inside the 20 kg apparatus.
