⚠️Don’t make these common mistakes in your brooder! ⛔️Mistake #1: Using newspaper as bedding - this is much too slippery! I like to use towels for the first 3-5 days, then move to shredded straw. ⛔️Mistake #2: Using a heat lamp - this is a fire risk, too stimulatory, and is hard to regulate. I prefer a brooder plate - it’s energy efficient and the chicks are much happier. ⛔️Mistake #3: Not propping up the water - it’ll get dirty in 5 seconds! Instead, prop it up with some blocks of wood. ⛔️Mistake #4: Not providing chick grit - while it’s not 100% necessary to provide while giving chick feed (it’s mashed up already for them), I’ve found that grit is still helpful and reduces the risk of pasty butt. Plus, they love it! ⛔️Mistake #5: Not covering your brooder box - there’s nothing more heartbreaking than losing your chicks to a neighbor cat or raccoon. ⛔️Mistake #6: Not checking for pasty butt - this is SO SO important and it’s pretty common, so be on the lookout! If it occurs, hold the area under warm water until it softens and falls off. Don’t pull it off!! Have you made any of these mistakes before? 🙋🏻‍♀️ Can you think of any to add to the list? Setting up a chick brooder before bringing home baby chicks If you’re raising chicks for the first time, your brooder setup matters. In this video I’m using a pop-up puppy play pen, Dominion Hemp bedding, a brooder plate instead of a heat lamp, high-protein chick crumble, and NutriDrench in their water for the first few days. A safe, clean, low-dust brooder with proper heat, food, and water placement makes a huge difference in chick health and stress levels. Save this for chick season and follow along for the full 2026 chick series. #ChickBrooderSetup #RaisingBabyChicks #BackyardChickens #BrooderSetup #BabyChicks

I can’t stand it when the chicks kick shavings into their waterers! Especially when we’re at work all day, we usually only check on them a few times a day and it’s the worst realizing they haven’t had clean water all day. Using pine pellets has been our best finding for freshening up the brooders. I’ve lost track of how many times we’ve raised chicks in brooders, but this is our first time using pellets. Although the pellets don’t go as far as a bag of shavings, the pellets have been worth it for us. And I’ll still use some shavings under the heat lamp, away from the waterers. Especially for the less messy, eggs layers. What are some tips you’ve learned when raising chicks? ⬇️ #brooder #chicks #meatchicks #broilers #egglayers #backyardchickens #homestead #homesteading #growyourownfood #workingmom

How much does it REALLY cost to set up a chick brooder? 💰🐣 If you’re thinking about getting chicks, here’s a breakdown of what I spent on my budget-friendly brooder setup! Keep in mind, costs can vary based on the supplies you choose and the number of chicks you’re raising. I have six, and this setup worked great for me! 💡 One-time costs: ✅ DIY Brooder (Large storage bin & hardware cloth) – $20 ✅ Brooder Heater – $43 ✅ Water Dispenser – $15 ✅ Feeder – $10 💰 Total: $88 ♻️ Recurring costs: 🛏️ Bedding (Hemp, 10 lbs) – $25 🥣 Starter Feed (5 lbs) – $15 🪨 Chick Grit (7 lbs) – $17 💰 Total: $57 (purchase frequency depends on your flock size!) While there are ways to save money, raising chicks isn’t free, and expenses can add up over time! Always budget for ongoing feed, bedding, and health needs before bringing chicks home. Comment the word ESSENTIALS and I’ll send you a list of my favorite brooder supplies, including the ones in this video! 🐥 🐓 Do you have any budget brooder hacks? When I first raised chicks, I thought a clean brooder, food, and water was enough. And technically… it is. But what I didn’t realise was how much mental stimulation chicks actually need. Chicks are wired to scratch, forage, and investigate everything around them from the moment they hatch. That instinct doesn’t turn off just because they’re in a brooder. So when a brooder is spotless but empty, all that natural energy has nowhere to go. That’s when you start seeing pacing, constant pecking, or chicks fixating on each other. My simple fix is scattering oaten and lucerne chaff through the bedding. Suddenly they have 👇 🌱 Something to dig through 🌾 Something to “hunt” for 🌿 A reason to spread out instead of clustering ✨ A way to burn mental energy Busy chicks aren’t just calmer. They’re more confident, more settled, and less likely to develop bad habits early. This isn’t about fancy enrichment or doing too much. It’s about understanding how chicks are designed to behave and working with that. Save this if you’re raising chicks right now, especially if you’re new 🤍🐣 LIKE~SHARE~SAVE🫶 Follow 👉 @stephsrainboweggboutique for everything chickens and egg related plus funny animal videos because everyone needs a laugh every once in a while. Growing fodder for your flock is so easy! It’s a great way to supplement feed and provide chlorophyll and proteins from the grain and sprouts. Plus you get some nice yellow egg yolks! Day 1 - Measure out your grain and soak overnight. I use barley ( a 50# bag) but you can also use wheat or whole oats. I love the trays from @bootstrapfarmer - they are sturdy and won’t bend under the weight of the water. Day 2 - dump the grain into a draining tray. I use micro green trays from @bootstrapfarmer. Spread your grain out. I keep the trays in a darker space until sprouts appear! Day 3 and on - rinse the trays DAILY and dump excess water! This is important so mold doesn’t grow. Day 4 usually sprouts appear and I move the trays to a sunny window. Keep watering them! Day 7 is usually when the grass is long enough to feed my chickens! I don’t like it to get more than 3 inches long because it can cause issues with their crops. Make sure they have grit available! Feed the chickens and watch the frenzy! I like to start a new tray every other day for them, but you can certainly start one daily depending on the size of your flock! . . . #chickensofinstagram #chickenmama #chickenfeed #backyardflock #chickenshenanigans #crazychickenlady #fresheggsdaily #farmanimals #poultryofinstagram #poultryfarm #backyardpoultrymag #iamcountryside
