SMBorn in 1929, Algia Mae Hinton was a blues musician and buck dancer from Johnston County, North Carolina. Here she is buck dancing while playing the guitar behind her head in Mike Seeger’s essential 1987 film Talking Feet.
“That old-time buck dancing,” as Algia Mae interprets it, is both subtle and complex. Her style is alternately percussive and quiet, busy and sparse, complicated yet accessible. She can slap, stamp, brush, scuff, tap heel or toe, drag or slide; and each sound has a different pitch, loudness, timbre, and sharpness.
Talking Feet, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, is the first documentary of flatfoot, buck, hoedown, and rural tap dancing, the styles of solo Southern dancing which are a companion to traditional old-time music and on which modern clog dancing is based.
