GRDon’t you think it’s interesting that every time Japanese streetwear legends launch a new brand… they introduce another character?
The new Buffer Japan project connected to Human Made just revealed a pink rabbit mascot named Buffy — alongside collaborator Tetsu Nishiyama, founder of WTAPS and Descendant.
And once you notice the pattern, you can’t unsee it.
Nigo built A Bathing Ape around the ape.
Then filled Human Made with ducks, bears, and mascots.
Now another project launches… with another character.
Japan didn’t accidentally dominate character culture. They turned it into a design language.
From Sanrio building a global empire around Hello Kitty to streetwear brands like RipNDip turning Lord Nermal into a multi-million-dollar icon — characters build emotional attachment in a way logos can’t.
Logos are symbols.
Characters are personalities.
And personalities turn brands into worlds.
What’s your character?
