HOWhenever I have friends come from overseas who want to eat sushi, I take them to @bysangsydney
It ticks all the boxes for me: unpretentious, accessible, kid friendly, the food is sustainable and you don’t have to book a set menu or omakase to eat delicious and quality nigiri.
They have an okonomi menu which lets you order nigiri to your liking; if you want to eat 10 pieces of Oma Pacific bluefin tuna toro you most certainly can - though it will cost you at $18 a piece.
Off the okonomi menu there is a premium nigiri omakase + gyoku for $54 where you get toro, scampi, mud crab, seared salmon belly and you can add uni for $10 more to each. It’s a good place to start if you’re unsure what to order.
With the new location there’s an emphasis on Japanese tapas and a few new items that I didn’t order like the gua bao and ceviche, something for next time.
Off the a la carte menu I usually can’t go past the $25 futomaki, you get four pieces and it comes packed with salmon and tempura.
I also always order their $40 - 7 day dry aged duck breast. It seems a little smaller than before on this visit but the taste still delivers.
From the donabe, the $69 toothfish is nice but it isn’t a must order.
Don’t expect cheap prices but you don’t have to blow your budget either.
If you’ve never been, definitely worth visiting if you’re looking for nigiri but also don’t have time for a 2 hour seating or want to play the omakase lotto where it’s almost impossible to get a booking elsewhere.
