Here's a quick CalTopo tip for you! The Snap To function is insanely useful for snapping a line to a particular feature (such as a trail) when you are measuring or drawing a line or polygon on the web. But what if you need to switch the type of feature you are snapping to in the middle of measuring or drawing? Easy! Use the Snap To drop down menu in the upper left hand corner of the map viewer to change the data source. For example, if you want to head off trail and follow a creek, you can change the Snap To drop down menu to "Hydro" to highlight all the creeks, rivers, lakes and bodies of water as opposed to the trails and roads. You can change what the line is snapping to at anytime in this menu. Unfamiliar with Snap To or not sure what the different Snap To data sources are? These days, most highways are equipped with speed cameras that automatically detect over-speeding and issue fines. But what if your phone could warn you before that happens? Open Google Maps, tap on your profile icon, go to Settings, then Navigation Settings. Scroll down and turn on both Speed Limits and Speedometer. Now, whenever you drive, you’ll be able to see the exact speed limit of the road right on your screen. Not just that—if there’s a speed camera ahead, Google Maps will alert you about 500 meters in advance. That gives you enough time to slow down and stay within the limit.
