For Resident Evil Requiem (2026), Leon was designed as an ikeoji figure — a cool/attractive older guy.[38] According to director Koshi Nakanishi, the developers initially considered making Leon the sole protagonist of Requiem but rejected this idea upon realizing that "making a horror game based around him [would be] difficult", given Leon's vast experience with monsters in previous games. Nakanishi also noted that fans of the franchise would be opposed to Leon being depicted as constantly afraid of his surroundings.[39] The dual-protagonist structure of Requiem, in which players alternate between Leon and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent Grace Ashcroft, was conceived to ensure the game would include slow-paced, horror-focused sections alongside faster-paced action sequences; this allowed the developers to show the differences in experience between Leon and Grace.[38] According to Nakanishi, Leon's sequences could give players a sense of release following Grace's chapters.[38] Nakanishi stated that when designing Leon and his gameplay, they wanted Requiem to highlight his physical and mental state, and how they have been influenced by his experience in dealing with horrific creatures. In contrast to Grace, Leon is much more comfortable with fighting, and the inclusion of more gore in his chapters was done to help showcase that.[40]
