Celtic warriors didn’t just braid their hair because it looked intimidating. They were using military-grade strategy that’s been forgotten for centuries.
Here’s what archeologists and historians recently uncovered:
The Tactical Advantage
Celtic fighters wore their braids tight against their skulls before battle. Why? One loose strand could mean death. Enemy warriors were trained to grab hair during close combat - one pull could expose your neck to a blade. A proper Celtic battle braid eliminated that vulnerability completely.
But it went deeper than defense.
The Psychological Weapon
Imagine facing a warrior with intricate braids woven with bone beads, metal rings, and war paint. Ancient Romans documented their fear of Celtic fighters, describing their elaborate hairstyles as “terrifying” and “otherworldly.” These braids weren’t decoration - they were intimidation technology.

THFinally, the Celtic Bar Braid tutorial! This 8 strand braid is one I found from an illustration online but it came with no instructions or ideas of how to make it. After playing around for a while I figured out how to make it but I was still stumped on what it was called or its history. That’s where you came in! Some amazing followers were able to figure out that its current name is the Celtic Bar Braid. Several others pointed out that it looked like it was similar to a Sámi traditional pattern. I was able to speak with an individual who is from the Northern Sámi and they confirmed that it was indeed a pattern that was used but they didn’t have/didn’t personally know a specific name for the pattern. They also shared that it is typically used in metal strands or threads- tin in the north and silver or other metals in the south- and not braided out of fiber. And goodness it is stunning!!! I suggest everyone look up traditional Sami artisans because their work is truly beautiful!
Material notes: For this pattern you will need 8 cords or strings. I used cotton macrame cords for visibility. The pattern has a 35% eat up rate (I round up to 40% for safety or down to 30% if it doesn’t matter much) so make sure to add that extra fiber when you calculate your needed project length. #braids #braiding #celtic #celticbarbraid #tutorial #diy #make #craft #create #learn

SCThis is a little time consuming but doesn’t involve any complex braids! You can do a Dutch or French braids down and then any braids you like for the bottom! I forgot to cover my hair tie with a braid or a ribbon don’t judge me..
