A little ceruse action for you! . A ceruse finish is a multi step process best used on open grain woods, like white oak. The first step is sealing the wood with a finish, or stain+finish (for example if you want a black and white ceruse). When the first coat has cured mix up your desired colour+finish and apply a second coat, buffing off any excess. The colour from the second coat will fill the open grain but not stain the wood, since the first coat has sealed that up. Try it out! . #woodworking #woodworker #toronto #ceruse #cerusedoak #diy

Because only the rich could afford not to work outside and get tanned. Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks used honey mixed with olive oil and even applied chalk dust as makeup. In the 16th century high society women of western Europe began using a lead compound called Venetian ceruse. It was extremely toxic, causing swelling, erosion of tooth enamel, hair loss, and even death. By the 19th century, arsenic wafers became a popular product, though it was known to be poisonous. With colonisation and slave trade, the white supremacist ideology was transported to  Asia and Africa, where local ethic groups are not genetically white. Today, the global market for skin lightening products is estimated to be worth between $8.8 billion and $19.86 billion. Despite many awareness campaigns, fair skin fetish continues to cause physical and psychological damage.
