SADay 6 no gps— between each watch, the helmsman always gives the other an extensive situation report and we form or reform our plan for the next leg. It’s important that we go over every possible scenario and that we pour over our charts to gain every clue possible from them.
So far, sailing without gps has made me feel even more free out here. It has opened up my focus from simply being on a chartplotter screen to our wider surroundings and to the ocean in general. The Ocean becomes something to work with in partnership, not something to overcome or combat.
The fact that our first sun sight with the sextant got us within 5 miles of our coastal fix is pretty exhilarating. We may just pull this off. Morale is high!
