JOA friend asked me recently if I would play some piano at the beginning of an event. And I said what’s the budget? And he said $0. And I said I’ll do it.
So I’ve been sitting at the piano every now and then and thinking about what I would play (I would normally not prepare anything and would just wing it when the time came and then I would sit in the audience for the rest of the night thinking “man, I feel like that was okay but I wish I would’ve prepared a little” - so I’m trying to be better at that.)…
I keep coming back to this Debussy piece that we all know (even if we don’t know we know it) because I think it is perhaps the most beautiful piece of music ever written.
And I can play it.
At home.
Alone.
And maybe you’re thinking, well of course you can play it, you SHOULD be able to play it, haven’t you been playing piano for like 20 years?! (To which I would say “yeah, 38 actually” and then you would say “oh ok, 38, sorry” but in my head I would hear “oh my gosh, 38? You look so young! What’s your skincare regimen?”
Anyway, we’re getting off topic, the point is that after playing piano for decades I still, when it comes to playing a classical piece of music in front of an audience completely tighten up and all my skill and experience goes out the window. It’s something I’m trying to overcome.
So I don’t know if I will chicken out and just play one of my own songs or make something up…I’m giving myself that option still…but this post is my own self-imposed nudge to be brave when that moment comes and just go for it. …also I haven’t posted a video where you can see my thighs in awhile so…enjoy. #Debussy #clairdelune #piano
