CLThe importance for beauty in our spaces cannot be overstated. Pro-beauty advocates, such as Roger Scruton, Christopher Alexander, Leon Krier and Alain de Botton, emphasize that aesthetically pleasing environments can enhance our well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life. According to these advocates, beautiful architecture fosters a sense of harmony and belonging, drawing on timeless principles that resonate with our innate appreciation for proportion and detail. The inclusion of gardens and green spaces, reminiscent of Renaissance designs, further enhances our connection and need for nature and promotes tranquility in our daily lives.
Unfortunately, modern architecture and its heirs disregards these principles, resulting in a world filled with gray, boxy, and chaotic structures. Architecture schools bear significant responsibility for this trend, as they frequently prioritize experimental and utilitarian designs over timeless aesthetics. However, there is hope. Numerous books on how to create beautiful spaces are available online through resources like Archive and AbeBooks. They are easy to access now more than ever. For more insights on the significance of beauty in architecture, one must go out of their own way, far from the academic path to listen to the forgotten voices from the past and the suppressed voices of today.

EXThe Doric Order from Andrea Palladio’s “I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura,” Venice, 1616
The uncommon 4th edition of what is arguably the most influential architecture book ever written. Divided into four books, Book I details the architectural orders and building materials. While Palladio’s villas contained in Book 2 are what really changed the world, it was Book I that was the most widely reprinted. Book I was translated and issued in Spanish, French, Dutch, and English. A full English translation didn’t appear until the early 18th century. In Book I, Palladio introduced new theory such suggesting specific distances between columns, new proportions for the Corinthian Column, and providing alternatives to column plinths and capitals as described by Vitruvius.

CAKarl Friedrich Schinkel hits differently… ✨
Confession of a Castleholic: Neo-Classicism isn’t my favourite architectural style. Even though I admire the ideas behind it and why it was favoured instead of Baroque splendour starting at the turn of the 18th century, Neo-Classical interior decoration can sometimes feel a bit bland compared to other perhaps spicier architectural styles.
However, one architect that always makes me fall in love with Neo-Classical design is Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Case in point: The stunning Garden Hall of Schloss Neuhardenberg. His lines just hit differently and seem to hide so much more that I’m always eager to discover.
Though to be perfectly honest with you, he isn’t the only Neo-Classical architect that stands out from the crowd to me. Another such example is Robert Adam though I haven’t been so lucky as to discover his works in person.
