Why we LOVE classical conversations &why we choose this:
The Classical Educational model walks children through three stages of learning and expression:
1 - The Grammar Stage (“Foundations” K4-6th Grade) - We do brain training and memory work, practiced and recited mainly in songs, in Math, Latin, Science, Geography, History, English, and Bible. In class, we practice the memory work, do a science project, an art activity, practice with our maps, and the students each give a 3 minute presentation.
2 - The Dialectic Stage (“Essentials” 4th-6th Grade) - We start delving into the concepts we have memorized and honing our writing skills. The focus is on grammar, writing, and math drills while in class.
3 - The Rhetoric Stage (“Challenge” 7th-12th grade) - We go further by learning how to dialogue via debates, discussions, writings, and leadership.
Classical Conversations has community groups, led by a director and a team of parent-tutors. We meet once per week for 3 hours (for Foundations) or 6 hours (for Foundations + Essentials OR Challenge.)
What do we do in class?
One thing I love about CC is that everything is set out for us - what we need to memorize each week, which science lessons or art lessons we will do while in class, and the sum total of the memory work learned in a 24 week period is insane. (We only meet 24 weeks out of the year.)
We don’t spend much time preparing for CC other than writing out memory work and making sure we practice what has been laid out for us - which is as easy as popping in a CD and listening to the songs.
