DevOps has always paid well — six figures minimum, senior engineers easily making $200K+. But entry-level roles have basically disappeared. Companies want 5 years experience minimum. The work is heavily script-based and AI does scripts and configs really well — AWS literally released their own 24/7 AI DevOps agent. On top of that, the role itself is fragmenting into Platform Engineering, SRE and Cloud Engineering. You’re not just fighting automation, you’re watching the role dissolve into other careers. If you’re already senior DevOps, then you’ve got options to switch. But if you’re trying to break into a high-paying technical role in 2026, pure DevOps isn’t the path anymore.
