SOWhat happens when you pour too soon. 😭
Story time! While most of you are busy selling soaps at holiday markets, I've been working on what *should* be a simple tutorial on how to control trace (the rate that soap batter sets up) and recognize when the soap is ready to pour. Except it hasn't been simple!!!
First recording went "fine" but there was some pertinent info that I forgot to include, so I thought I'd try it again. This is my second try. Definitely failed to recognize when it was ready to pour.
On to my third try! Oh no. One color traced faster than the other two. Now I've failed to control trace!
Tomorrow....yes, tomorrow I will be making my fourth attempt. I've learned something with every batch. For what it's worth, I will share my best practices that *usually* work. But it's still a chemical reaction with a variety of factors and sometimes they don't react as expected!
I understand these incidents are not uncommon, so if you are also experiencing unexpected results in your soapmaking, feel free to vent in the comments!!

SH🧼 Basic Soap Recipe for 3lbs of soap
Lard – 30% → 14.4 oz
Coconut oil – 30% → 14.4 oz
Canola oil – 35% → 16.8 oz
Castor oil – 5% → 2.4 oz
Lye (NaOH) – 6.84 oz
Water – 13.7 oz

How to Make It
1️⃣ Mix lye into water, cool to ~130°F
2️⃣ Melt oils, combine with lye
3️⃣ Stick blend to trace
4️⃣ Pour into mold
5️⃣ Unmold in 24–48 hrs
6️⃣ Cure for 4–6 weeks
Classic. Bubbly. Balanced. 🧼💛
Everything can be found at Walmart or Amazon. Soap molds can be found in any craft store (or Amazon).
