VE143 years ago today, Karl Marx passed away.
The German philosopher and economist helped reshape modern political thought through works like The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital. His ideas on class struggle, labor, and capitalism influenced generations of political movements and debates across the world.
In the film ‘A King in New York’, Charlie Chaplin poked fun at Cold War paranoia when a boy is questioned for reading Marx and responds, “Do I have to be a communist to read Karl Marx?” A reminder that ideas and curiosity often travel further than labels.
Fun fact: Marx spent years studying and writing in the British Museum Reading Room, where much of Das Kapital was developed.
