They need a little time and practice to figure it out. ⁠⁠ Some babies may never four point crawl. And to be honest, that's okay. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Would it bother me you ask?⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Well, my first baby commando crawled for ages, and initially I did nothing about it.....I wanted to see if he would work it out on his own. But after 2 months I decided I'd like to help him out, because I'm a paed physio and I had all the tricks up my sleeve anyway. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ And after another month, 4 point crawl he did. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Was it because I nudged him along with some exercises? ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I couldn't tell you. But here’s the thing: while these unique crawling styles are adorable, a true hands-and-knees crawl (also called quadruped crawling) plays a big role in your baby’s development. 14 years ago, when my son had his own signature scoot, we didn’t think much of it. We figured he’d grow out of it—and he did, eventually walking just fine. But after 15 years working in movement rehab, I’ve learned how critical crawling in a cross-body pattern is for the brain, spine, and fine motor skills. Now, my youngest is doing the same scoot-crawl, and this time, I’m more intentional. Instead of just watching and hoping he’ll figure it out, we’ve turned it into a fun game with gentle guidance using a homemade crawling track inspired by the Doman Method. Why is four-point crawling so important? It strengthens the connection between the left and right sides of the brain. It builds core, shoulder, and hip stability. It lays the groundwork for fine motor skills like handwriting, balance, and coordination. If your baby is scooting, shuffling, or army-crawling, don’t stress—it’s more common than you think. And there’s a lot you can do to support their movement in a playful, engaging way! Studies have shown that kids who have not integrated the STNR reflex have difficulty with eye/hand coordination. This can cause problems with bringing food to mouth and with handwriting down the road. ~ Does your child only commando crawl or have a “lopsided” crawl? These can be signs of trunk tightness as well as retained reflexes. ~ I have been certified in TMR TOTS also known as Total Motion Release. The concept is easy and I’ve had tons of success treating torticollis and hemiplegia. Basically, we don’t want to hurt kids when we stretch, right? So we stretch to the easy side. I’m doing a lower body twist in the second slide. I twist to the easy side and hold for 4-5 minutes and then the child is better able to move to the more difficult side.
